Al-ʿAsifah ("The Storm") was established on January 1, 1965, as the mainstream armed wing of the Palestinian political party Fatah. It was co-founded by prominent leaders Yasser Arafat and Khalil al-Wazir. The formation of Al-ʿAsifah marked the official commencement of Fatah's armed struggle for Palestinian independence, with its first military communiqué announcing guerrilla operations against Israel.

In its early years, Al-ʿAsifah's military impact was limited, with operations more symbolic than effective. Over time, many of its forces were integrated into the Palestine Liberation Organization's (PLO) armed wing, the Palestinian Liberation Army. By the 1980s and 1990s, the name Al-ʿAsifah was retained by some units, but following the outbreak of the Al-Aqsa Intifada in 2000, Fatah rebranded its armed wing as the Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades.

The flag associated with Al-ʿAsifah features a green background with the emblem of Fatah at its center. This emblem includes two crossed rifles overlaid on a map of historic Palestine, symbolizing the armed struggle for Palestinian liberation. Above the emblem, Arabic script reads: "Fatah is the lifeblood of the revolution and Al-ʿAsifah is the beacon of the armed struggle."

The design of the flag reflects the group's commitment to armed resistance and Palestinian nationalism, aligning with Fatah's broader goals of achieving self-determination and establishing an independent Palestinian state.
