Sūrat al-Muzzammil (Arabic: سورة المزمل) (The Enshrouded One, Bundled Up, Enfolded) is the 73rd sura of the Qur'an. This Makki Surah contains 20 ayat, or verses which are traditionally recognized as signs from God.
Al-Muzzammil takes its name from the reference to the Prophet Muhammad, in his cloak praying at night, in the opening verses of the sura. Many commentators claim that “The Enfolded One” is a holy name for Muhammad, used throughout the Qur’an.
In the beginning of this sura, Allah prepares Muhammad for an important revelation. In preparation for this revelation, Allah loosens the strict regulation on night prayer. Muhammad is then instructed to be patient for the disbelievers will be punished in Hell, as exemplified by a story of Pharaoh’s punishment.
It is narrated from Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq (a.s.) that frequent recitation of this surah is a protection from Jinn and the reciter will be in the company of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) on the Day of Resurrection. This surah also protects one from the evil actions of an unjust person.
Prisoners secure early release by reciting this surah and those who recite it properly will never face poverty or starvation. Keeping this surah in one’s possession ensures safety from the Jinn, victory in debate or confrontation, and safety of possession and wealth. Debts are also easily paid back.
